On the anniversary weekend of the Dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and the Gettysburg Address, the Gettysburg Foundation lights more than 3,500 luminary candles-one on each Civil War soldier’s grace in the National Cemetery, to remember and honor the sacrifices made by those who fought at Gettysburg. The candle lighting and reading of soldiers’ names is a solemn commemoration of the sacrifices made on this and other battlefields.
