About St. Mary’s Catholic School
Welcome to St. Mary’s Catholic School!
Each day we strive to provide a sound academic program, traditional in its overall approach, but also incorporating the latest in educational innovations. All of this is guided by the Office of Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Arlington. Above all, our goal is to educate our children in the ways of Faith. Our Catholicity is of the utmost importance to me and to the administration, staff, and faculty of our school.
St. Mary’s is a school rich in history and tradition. We are the oldest school in the Diocese of Arlington, and the school has been a true blessing to our parish for over 140 years. Our academics, extracurriculars and all the sacramental opportunities that are offered at St. Mary’s give our students opportunities for growth and grace. While our school is dynamic, and ever-changing to fit the needs of our students and parents, we maintain a respect for the history and traditions that have been a part of our past. Central to our mission, always, is the fact that Christ is at the center of our efforts.
ACCREDITATION & ACADEMICS
BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
In 2009, St. Mary’s Catholic School was honored as one of 314 schools nationwide that received the Blue Ribbon School designation. The nationally-funded Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors schools that are models of excellence, that demonstrate a strong commitment to educational excellence for all students, and that achieve high academic standards. The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices.
Our pre-kindergarten curriculum is child-centered and developmentally appropriate. Using early childhood instructional strategies, our students learn and develop according to their individual abilities. We use Letter-of-the-Week to introduce each letter of the alphabet and its sound. Varied and engaging activities help our students gain pre-literacy and pre-writing skills. These skills are infused daily into each lesson, whether it be through art, music, manipulatives, class discussions, mobile technology, or journal writing. Children benefit from having a full-time instructional assistant working alongside their teacher. Our current 1:8 ratio affords our preschool students individualized instruction. Their personal creations are displayed prominently. Spanish is taught twice a week. Our children also have the opportunity to explore science, math, reading, and dramatic play through center-based activities.
