We live in a world filled with marvelous technology. The good news is that a lot of that technology concerns helping older adults stay mobile. The fact is that an elderly relative of mine was very mobile during his younger years. In fact, he was an amateur athlete. He played football and even ran track. Certainly, he was a very physically active parent that taught his kids the joys of staying physically active. However, it is inevitable that limited mobility is a part of getting older. Even the most active adults face some mobility issues. The good news is that seniors have a wide variety of mobility products like a motorized wheelchair to consider.
Many families and seniors have learned to deal with all the mobility issues that affect a wide variety of seniors. Certainly, each and every senior with mobility problems would like to achieve their own independence. It’s very frustrating for a once very active senior to have to rely on others for help and support performing daily tasks or just going for a walk. The wide variety of mobility products are designed to help older adults with mobility problems achieve some sort of independence, boosting their self-esteem and reducing feeling like a burden to other members of the family. Mobility products range from a reacher that helps the senior retrieve a product that is located high in a kitchen cabinet to a motorized scooter that gets them around the town.
The ability to stay mobile and vital is important for older adults. Clearly, it is important for their emotional and physical well-being too. Therefore, it is important to look for the right products to keep the senior mobile and safe. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the leading mobility products that are designed to make life easier for older adults with mobility issues.
- Canes And Walkers – The canes and walkers provide the needed support to seniors that have mobility issues due to age, arthritis, or an injury. They provide the proper amount of support and stability that keeps the older adult safe and active.
- Electric Wheelchair – The seniors that do not have the strength to physically use a cane or walker should consider a motorized wheelchair that will get them to their destination with the added support that is required.
- Scooters – Scooters serve the same purpose as a wheelchair, but are a bit larger. Some are perfect for running errands outside with minimal effort.
Mobility Product Selection
During the holidays, special events, or vacation time, it’s difficult for the average senior to take part in the family gatherings. However, adding mobility products to the mix will make it possible for that senior to join the family fun and really enjoy life again. The key to successfully enjoying life with the family again begins with selecting the right mobility product for the mobility-challenged adult. Select canes for seniors that have good upper body strength, strong arms, a firm grip, and the ability to maneuver around with a cane. A walker is a good selection for a person that has some upper body strength and the ability to pick up the walker, if necessary. A mobile electric chair or scooter is suggested for the adult that has very little upper body strength and is not able to use a cane or a walker. The mobile electric chair or scooter should help the person maneuver around their environment on the inside or outside of the home.
Certainly, every family would like to make sure that their senior or older adult stays mobile, active, and safe in their home or outside of the home. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of products on the market that make it possible for the senior with mobility problems to stay active and involved with life. Included here are some of the most common products used by seniors to handle mobility issues. Always talk over mobility issues with a family physician before settling on a mobility product.
