Please say hi to: Alina Ackenbom
Where’s home? Palmyra, VA
What are the “must do’s” in your town: Palmyra is a small town but these are a few things to do in the area Pleasant Grove Park Museum and Heritage Trail, Canoeing and Kayaking in the Rivanna River, Thomas Jefferson Monticello
Meet the family: Married for 15 years, mother of a teenage daughter (14) and a pre-teen son (12) . We have a beautiful collie, named Kender.
Passions & Interests: Teaching tennis to children and adults is my biggest passion. I have been teaching tennis for over 20 years. Tennis is great for your mind and body and you can play it all your life. And it is fun and social. In the summer I teach tennis to campers at Camp Friendship and in the fall and spring I teach many local students. Growing up in Russia I had a dream of coming to America to teach tennis, this would combine my love for the sport and English language. I am lucky as I get to live my dream.
Most controversial thing about you: I am a very strong willed and self-disciplined person but I am very soft when it comes to parenting. If I ever need to discipline my kids and take away privileges, like electronics or hanging with their friends somehow I am not good with enforcing these rules and before I know they have their privileges back.
Biggest Pet Peeve: I don’t like to hear people swear. I grew up surrounded by people who never tolerated the use of bad language or bad words in their vocabulary. My parents, my coaches and my mentors would never tolerate any cursing or swearing. To this day I dislike it very much when people do it around me especially if they think it’s cool to do it.
Major Goal: One of my goals is to help my husband with his mission of running a summer camp for children from around the world. He started Camp Friendship with a goal of bringing children and camp counselors together to play, to learn and to make life long friendships, in peace! Camp is diverse, educational and a lot of fun. To keep our business going and to continue with camp mission would be a great life goal for me.
Best Advice Received: I grew up in Russia. When I was 16 my tennis coach advised me to learn at least one foreign language as it would open up the world to me. I worked very hard to learn English. She was right, the knowledge of English allowed me to travel and discover the world.
Go-To Family Dinner: I always have canned salmon on hand to make quick salmon patties. I mix salmon with one egg, onion, bread crumbs and old bay seasoning and then fry them in the pan. I serve them with rice and green beans or a salad.
Date Night: My husband and I enjoy going to Downtown Charlottesville for dinner, movie or a concert in the Pavilion
