Mount Vernon Holiday Trolley
New this year, visitors can take a trolley from Old Town Alexandria to George Washington’s Mount Vernon and back again to Old Town, in a ride that unites George Washington’s estate with his adopted hometown. The Mount Vernon Holiday Trolley will board near the Alexandria Visitors Center and Market Square at the corner of King and N. Fairfax streets on the hour from 9 am to 3 pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the holiday season. Alexandria’s Town Crier will join visitors on the inaugural Holiday Trolley ride at 9 am on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 29. The trolley will operate through December 29.
During the holidays, Mount Vernon decks the halls with traditional decorations and delights Christmastime visitors with festive activities while Old Town Alexandria similarly glitters under twinkling lights as one of HGTV’s “Top 10 Christmas Towns.” The Holiday Trolley will reconnect these two iconic destinations, allowing visitors to experience Northern Virginia’s most popular historic attraction during the day and return to historic Alexandria for superb shopping, dining and culture.
Tickets include a round-trip trolley ride and admission to Mount Vernon at a cost of $25 for adults and $8 for children age 6 to 11. Age 5 and under are FREE. Tickets may be purchased at the Alexandria Visitors Center, 221 King Street, online at www.trustedtours.com or by phone at 202-832-9800. The Visitors Center is both a trolley ticket outlet and a warm waiting area located just across the street from the trolley boarding area. Visitors should look for the orange and green trolley at the corner of King Street and N. Fairfax Street in front of Market Square (301 King Street). The trolley departs Old Town on the hour from 9 am to 3 pm and returns from Mount Vernon on the half hour from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (Mount Vernon closes at 4 pm).
The Holiday Trolley unites George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon with his adopted hometown of Alexandria into one richly authentic experience. With more than one million visitors a year, Mount Vernon is the most visited historic attraction in Northern Virginia while Old Town is a “best of” when it comes to the spectrum of sites and events associated with the first president. More than 140 locations in present-day Alexandria are associated with the nation’s first president, who conducted business, gathered with friends, worshiped and even owned a townhouse in the city.
The special service is provided by Old Town Trolley Tours of Washington, DC in partnership with the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association and George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
