In this world premiere Kennedy Center commission for a large jazz ensemble and eight actors, a 10-year-old boy in 1930s Michigan searches for his father starting with a single clue: a flyer advertising Herman E. Calloway and his band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. Part of the Kennedy Center’s Performances for Young Audiences, this engaging family production has been adapted by Kirsten Greenidge from Christopher Paul Curtis‘s book, the winner of the 2000 Newbery Medal for Excellence in Children’s Literature and the Coretta Scott King Award, with original music by Terence BlanchardRecommended for age 9 and up.
