Jim was born and raised in Randallstown, MD and graduated from Randallstown Senior High in 1981. He went to college at the University of Tampa but left prior to getting his degree in order to tend to urgent family issues.
He relocated to Carroll County to be close to his aging grandparents and ended up starting a moving business. Worry Free Moving was a successful commercial and residential moving firm. Jim progressed to specializing in relocating seniors in the community and within large senior campuses. In 1997, after doing a lot of moving seniors into assisted living facilities he discovered a need for communities serving the needs of seniors who had trouble coping in their own homes but were not ready for a nursing home. He took a business plan to a few local banks and ended up starting a senior group housing business! He designed, constructed then operated assisted living homes for 16 residents. With that, he built 3 communities in the Carroll County area and sold the business and homes in 2014.
Jim has four kids. Casie, 20, is a Deans List junior at Towson University majoring in elementary education. Cole, 16, is a sophomore at Westminster High School who is on the varsity football team playing both offense and defense – and getting ready to drive. Carlee, 13, is a soccer fanatic who has been on the same travel team for 7 years. And, finally, Hanna, 9, is a gymnastics buff. Jim’s mom, Patricia, is a longtime local resident and currently resides at Fairhaven senior community in Sykesville and Jim’s late Dad Henry owned Free State Adjusters in Pikesville/Owings Mills for 30 years.
The entire family is active at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westminster and Jim also volunteers for the Red Cross. Recently, Jim completed the “Polar Bear Plunge” (a fundraiser for Special Olympics). Jim is an avid Ravens, Orioles and Terps fan and has seen the Ravens play in 22 different NFL stadiums.
Jim loves camping, fishing and anything nature oriented. And as well as being an Eagle Scout, Jim is a Maryland Master Gardner! A true “jack of all trades!”
