Happy Almost Fall!
I can’t believe September is almost here. Fall is my absolute favorite season for so many reasons. I mean, first of all, the clothes. Jeans, long sleeved t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters…all while still wearing my flip flops! Then there is football season. I’m not even a huge fan of professional football but I’ll tell you this-every single time I drive past a high school and see the football team out practicing or playing a game I get such a wave of nostalgia for my high school years. And of course, all the fun events and activities that fall brings. The weather is still warm enough to be outside but not so hot that you are uncomfortable. I spend more time outdoors in the fall than I do any other season.
I lived for years near the beach in Delaware and fall meant a respite from the crazy crowds of summer. The weather was still warm and us locals finally had the beach and the shops to ourselves! One of my favorite fall events was the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, De. If you’ve never been you should definitely check it out! There is a costume parade, trick-or-treating, and even a pet costume parade! That time of year you can get a pretty decent deal on hotel rooms so it’s a perfect weekend get-away.
When I lived in Europe, fall meant the start of wine festival season. In Germany the weather turns cool a bit earlier in the season and there is nothing better than camping out for a weekend in the cool, crisp fall air. The wine’s not bad either! Of course, then there is Oktoberfest. Which, did you know, actually takes place in September? I’ve never been to the real Oktoberfest in Munich but I have been to several smaller Oktoberfest events in Stuttgart, Germany. If you ever have the chance to travel to Germany, this is an experience you definitely do not want to miss.
Now that I’m a mom, fall means more festivals and fun, just in a more family friendly kind of way. Fall brings us county fairs, street festivals, pumpkin and apple festivals, Halloween events…you can basically be outside every weekend from now through Halloween if you want. I know I will be! You can even start a bit early this weekend with the Augustoberfest Weekend Celebration in Hagerstown, Maryland. The Maryland State Fair also begins this weekend in Timonium, Maryland.
September brings us the Great Frederick Fair, The annual Fall Festival and Taste of Falls Church, and the 17th Annual Hanover Chili Cook Off just to name a few. Things start to pick up (and cool off) even more in October. Check out the National Apple Harvest Festival at the South Mountain Fairgrounds in Biglerville, PA, 30th Annual Manassas Fall Jubilee, and the Halloween Carnival in Falls Church, VA.
If you are looking for fun stuff to do this fall season, be sure to check out our event calendar for all of the fall fairs, festivals and events I’ve been able to find. More events are added daily. And if you find or know of an event I missed, please email me at info@tots2tweens and let me know so I can add it to the calendar!
